Room 3 along with the other rooms at school have been exploring their creative minds with Ms. Monica the past couple of weeks. During their time with Ms. Monica, the children have a blast unleashing their inner creativity through the different art activities that are planned for them. As the year goes on, the children will explore different ways to use their creative minds to create art pieces that allow us to take a peek at their vast imagination.

Abstract Sand Art
This was a great art project for creating line forms through an unconventional method. The older pod children learned what a line is in art. They then used the glue as the tool for making the lines across their paper. To trace our glue lines, they then used their fine motor skills and pincer skills to sprinkle the sand and retrace their lines. They loved it for the process and the sensory experience!
The younger pod also created this art project, but for them it was much more of an exploratory art project. Allowing them to just dig in….
These make a great abstract line and movement piece. Enjoy!
Painting Elmer The Elephant
In the art studio this week we looked at the story “Elmer The Elephant,” by David Mckee. This book has agreat message: although we may all look different, we all have the same hearts and feelings. It also reminds us that we shouldn’t exclude those who are different. It celebrates in a beautiful way individuality. Although God made us all to look different, we all come from the same creator. What a great reminder to start the new school year. YAY!
The children then learned about patchwork and painted their very own “Elmer” using sponges as a painting tool.

Explorations in Splatter Paint!
Room 5 took paint outdoors this week. We had a blast trying out different ways to do splatter paint, while reinforcing the unit on Jackson Pollack’s style of painting from Mrs. Monica’s Art Studio last week. Our young friends took full advantage of this messy and challenging method- putting all their strength and focus into their work. We used gross motor skills to throw the sponges and pom-poms, as well as shake the brushes!

We practiced hand-eye coordination to aim and hit the various paint vessels onto each paper, and we had a great time getting messy too! In the end our little artists created one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork that they put their whole heart into.

Pollock Paintings Preschool Style
The children in the younger pod learned about Jackson Pollock and his approach in painting. He is an American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionism movement. He was known for his unique style of drip painting and never touching the canvas with the brush.
We used 3 golf balls to create a similar look, and in the end the children had the chance to drip paint for their final touches…

Mural Older Pod
Rooms 1 and 2 worked together to create an ocean scene mural. The children and I discussed all the different types of sea animals found in the ocean. From sting rays, dolphins, octopus to the many different colored fishes. Then we all got busy drawing and painting. Each student contributed in their own special way. Working together and respecting each others’ drawings and space helps build on team work and encouragement for one another…
Wayne Thiebaud Creations in the Art Studio…
This week the children were introduced to the American painter Wayne Thiebaud. Wayne is widely known for his colorful use of pastel paints in depicting commonplace objects such as cakes, pastries, hot dogs and ice cream cones. The children created their very own cake. They put their imagination hats on to become a pastry chef while painting in the colors that Wayne would have used. Wayne lives in Arizona and is 95 years old.
