Easter Blessings in Room 2

Easter is upon us! What better way to get the children to understand than by telling the story of our Risen King through a marshmallow! A marshmallow? All the classes make this yummy treat. You get a marshmallow to represent Jesus’ body (it is white and pure). The children prepare Jesus for his burial by anointing his body with oils and spices (butter, cinnamon and sugar.) They took the cloth (crescent roll) and wrapped Jesus’ body to lay him in the tomb (oven). After 3 days in the tomb (really only 20 minutes), the children notice that Jesus’ body is no longer there (the marshmallow melts leaving a hole in the cloth)!!

The children got to enjoy these special holiday treats along with fresh fruit and veggies during snack!

A Walk Through A Snowy Day!

The children in Room 2 went on a field trip to the Discovery Cube to check out their Storyland Exhibit that featured A Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats. They enjoyed a story time and activity. The story read was The Mitten, by Jan Brett. They made their own mitten to place their animals in.

The children then got to explore the exhibit.

At the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree the children had to match the upper case letter with the lower case letter.

For The Snowy Day. the snow crunched under their feet. They got to make snowmen and snow angels.

They learned about gardening in a Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Abuela had lots of activities in different languages. When you opened a window children sang a song in a different language. They heard Welcome in different languages and got to play with magnetic pieces on a New York landscape.

One story that was new to the teachers and children was  Tuesday. It is a wordless book about a day in a town when it rains frogs! The children got to tell time on a giant clock tower and had a chance to report the news on a television.

Other stories featured were If you Give A Mouse a Cookie and Where’s Spot?

Fun was had by all and we got to end the trip with a picnic Lunch at Hansen Dam Park.

A Snowy Day!

The cold weather in January brought a discussion of snow!! In Room 2 we had fun reading the book The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats. This beloved Caldecott Award winning book is about a little boy Peter who goes out and has adventures in the snow. Our dramatic play was transformed into a snowy day scene so our children could reenact it. They even had snowball fights!IMG_0989

They also had fun making Snowmen in different forms: art, sensory, and food.

We had so many different sensory/science activities; we made snow men with shaving  cream and baking soda on trays. In the sensory bin we had fake insta-Snow.

They painted snowmen and snow girls (some children put long hair on their snow person) with white paint as well as puffy paint. We used paper collage and “bleach snow” and made snowmen as big as our name!

Gingerbread Fun in Room 2!

FullSizeRender (23)

So many stories about Gingerbread cookies were read in Room 2! The children enjoyed comparing and contrasting the differences between them. For example, the children noticed that in both Gingerbread Baby and Gingerbread Bear the cookies escape because of the oven being opened by impatient children before the time was up. One theme that came up in all the stories was teasing. The cookie taunted and teased the other characters into chasing it, resulting in a negative consequence in most stories. Those that concluded with  a happy ending had an element of sharing.

The children enjoyed making edible gingerbread men, girls and bears. They rolled out the pre-made dough and used different cookie cutters to make the cookies.

Then Ms. Daisy was patient and didn’t open the oven door while they were cooking. We would have had to chase lots of cookies out in the yard!

Then the children got to decorate them and eat them!

The children also enjoyed decorating their own paper Gingerbread cookies.

Staying in town for Christmas? You can continue the gingerbread fun at the Discovery Cube LA. They have an exhibit called, “The Science of Gingerbread,” until January 3rd.

Soup From A Stone. Fancy That!!

Stone Soup Days at PCS

Stone Soup has been a tradition at Pasadena Christian Preschool since the very beginning. It’s based on a folktale that’s about sharing and coming together as a community: “Bring what you got. Put it in the pot. Every bit counts, from the largest to the least. Together we can celebrate a Stone Soup Feast!”

Underwood Family Farm

The children in Room 2 had a wonderful time learning at the farm. We listened to a presentation about fruits and vegetables. Did you know that kiwis grow on a vine? We also got to go on a tractor ride to the fields to pick vegetables!

The farmer showed them how to pick carrots, candy cane beets, cilantro, and lettuce…all the yummy makings of a salad! We put some aside to make next week to have with our Stone Soup.

Farm Animal Show and Feeding

Our volunteers didn’t know they would have Basil and Cilantro crawling on them. These were the farm rats!

A big thank you to all the parents that volunteered. We couldn’t have done it without you!!!

Harvest Cooking Activities

Learning Through Cooking

Children learn math skills such as counting, measuring, and following directions. They also explore simple concepts about quantity, conversations about color, texture, shape, and sizes. Cooking also involves reading and communicating. We use picture recipe boards so the children can see the recipe in print. During fall we have cooked with apples, pumpkin and corn.
