Let’s Keep Our Bodies Clean and Healthy!

For Personal Hygiene Week, we wanted to teach our students about the importance of keeping our body clean and healthy. Our activities were based on Ben Magleby’s Sugarbug Doug: All About Cavities, Plaque, and Teeth book.

Reading the story allowed us to follow sugarbugs (bacteria) as they destroyed teeth by building houses (plaque) and creating cavities. We learned that sugarbugs love when we eat sugar and dislike when we eat fruits and vegetables. The only way to get rid of sugarbugs is when we brush and floss our teeth in the morning and night. The following day we discussed, “What is a Cavity?” and “What Can We Do to Keep Our Teeth Healthy and Clean?”.
We drew our interpretation of cavities and healthy teeth! Some of us drew teeth full of sugarbugs that were creating cavities. Others drew what they could do to have clean teeth, like brushing and eating vegetables. We did an amazing job sharing our interpretation and listening to others!

After having a discussion about dental health, we were ready to practice brushing! Each student was given a styrofoam cup that was colored in yellow watercolor. This signified a dirty tooth with plaque and it was our job to brush our teeth and clean away the yellow stains. We each received a toothbrush with toothpaste and brushed away. This was our favorite part! Afterwards, we were shown what happens when we brush and rinse with water. The cup was put under water and rinsed away the yellow on the cup. The cup (tooth) was now squeaky clean! Yay!

We also read The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist, Teach Your Dragon Good Hygiene, and Germs Are Not for Sharing. To end our week, we had a large group discussion and visual demonstration of how to wipe correctly when we go potty. The dos and don’ts of using toilet paper.

What an exciting week we had, we learned how to keep our bodies clean and healthy! Amazing work, friends!

FUN RUN

ONE FOE THE MONEY, TWO FOR THE SHOW, THREE TO GET READY and FOUR TO “GO!” “Oh, Yes!” The weather was great, the kids were excited and ready to have fun all together as a big school.

HEALTHY TEETH

How do we keep our teeth healthy?

These is what the children said:

Miriam: “You go to the dentist.” Emma: “You brush your teeth.” Christian: “You put toothpaste on your toothbrush, you don’t eat.” Michael: “Eat good food.” Isaiah: “You eat rice.” Justice: “You brush the top and the bottom teeth.” Lucy: “You don’t eat ice cream and candy.” Dustee: “The dentist will look inside your mouth.” Austin: “You eat chicken.”

Green Eggs and Ham!

This week we have been celebrating the beloved children’s book author and illustrator Dr. Seuss. This lovely caught moment of our awesome, creative outdoors teacher Ms. Gwendolyn enjoying Room 2’s green eggs and ham. 🙂 don’t we just love our playful teachers at PCS for their spirit of fun and enthusiasm, and you gotta love her mixed match socks as well! -Mrs. Monica

Promoting a sense of self through art.

The students from Room 1 are beginning to learn who they are and form a sense of identity. We also talked about how we like to spend our time playing, sports and books we like etc. We then spent a few minutes looking at our facial characteristics. How we look and how uniquely each one of us was made in Gods image. We also looked at a few “self portraits” of famous artists. I explained the definition of “self portrait”. They each then held a mirror and looked at themselves closely. Looked at color of eyes, mouth and nose shape etc. They then painted a self portrait. Enjoy! – Ms. Monica

LOVE BUGS

February was an amazing month for Room 4. We got to celebrate Valentine’s Day in collaboration with our amazing Room 4 parents. We decorated cookies, shared valentines and showed appreciation for one another.

FEBRUARY

We read books about making snow family , here you see-how our class made their own family snow family with flannel cut outs. Wayne Thiebaud; Cake Paintings

The wonderful American artist Thiebaud was widely known for his colorful works depicting commonplace objects, pies, paint cans, ice cream cones, pastries, cakes and hot dogs. He was associated with the pop art movement because of his interest in objects of mass culture. I shared with the students his work and I even read them a book filled with his artwork. We also talked about “pastel colors”, and how to mix them. They then so eagerly got busy working on their beautiful cake/pastry painting. Enjoy! -Mrs Monica
